Jenny will eat anything as long as it's edible - testicles, tripe, lobster brains, intestines...and she loves it. She fights her Dad to eat chicken kidneys whenever it's served. But two years ago, she decided to try to become vegetarian, after reading a chapter of Food, Inc. She found out that the resources needed to produce enough meat to feed one person could actually produce vegetarian meals for 25 people. She doesn't know how accurate that statistic is, but it was enough to make her realise that her consumption of meat is indirectly contributing to world food shortages and world hunger. However, she found that she loved meat too much and not being able to eat it made her feel down, so now she just tries to avoid eating meat as often as possible, and eat only kangaroo meat (as it is not farmed, and also relatively sustainable). And also spread the word to anyone who would listen. As for health, she believes that a balanced diet does the trick, because that's what her parents have always taught her. Jenny also loves oysters and sashimi in general, mushrooms, asparagus, sun dried tomatoes, pesto, duck chins, nut meat, jellyfish, fish eyes, and Tiny Teddys.
Claire is a bit of a health freak. Not in a way that she nibbles on carrot crumbs to lose weight, but in a way that she is trying to boost her health by eating things that makes her body go huzzah! After being diagnosed with post-viral fatigue and some sort of mild gluten intolerance, she’s had to give her diet an overhaul in order not to feel like a degenerate sloth all the time. This meant eating non-processed foods with little ingredients and maximum nutrients. She’s found out what works for her body and has never felt better. If you have any intolerances or want to find a way to boost your immunity then you might like to join her on her journey of trial-and-error from sickly Sadie to a dynamic power-woman (maybe one day!) with weird-looking but delicious green smoothies, exotic fruits (siberian pineapple?) and gluten-free foods that do NOT resemble gravel. She loves coconut ice-cream, felafels, dark chocolate, smoothies and peanut butter by the spoonful.
Nina is a food lover. Not the type of food lover that will eat anything and everything, but anything healthy, wholesome and most importantly, tasty. As a a breakfast fiend and 'muesli snob', she is the housemate who spends half an hour assorting her homemade muesli, yoghurt and fresh fruit in to a satisfying and nutritional start to the day, every day. Although her muesli obsession means she will quite happily have breakfast for every meal, her love for fresh vegetables, tofu, nuts and her eternal love for pan-fried haloumi explain why we'll often find her over the stove creating her quinoa or brown rice concoctions. Morally, she wishes she could tell you she's a vegetarian but unfortunately the inevitable once-a-fortnight red meat cravings have led her to calling herself a 'vegivore'! A lover of all those natural 'super-foods' and a little bit of an exercise fanatic (an athlete they call it), she is a coffee addict, whom is currently being forced by a certain housemate (Saraj) to ween herself off diet coke. She adores felafel, tabouli and foods associated with sunshine.
"I'm like Nigella but without the curves."
Sarah if she is not practising yoga Sarah can be heard lecturing housemates and boyfriend alike on the benefits of an all organic vegetarian diet. However those who know her well would tell you that if you scratch the health-conscious, 'mind-body in perfect union' exterior you will find a girl that enjoys nothing more than sneaking off for a glass of wine washed down with a cigarette...(often before 4pm). Despite her vices Sarah truly believes in a wholesome, nutritious and organic vegetarian diet. So in a bid to embody the smoke-free vegan she pretends to be, Sarah is committing herself to this blog where she will make herself (and her food choices) accountable to you!
